That honestly is really all it means. Usually when you bet on the river in a lot of situations you have either air or a pretty strong hand, thus this allows villains to use low pairs and even A high hands as bluff catchers. If you start betting the river a bit thinner with like 2np pair type hands then you will be merging your range of bluffs/monsters when you bet on the river and you'll be much tougher to read.

Everyone here explains it so much better than it was explained the aejones post.

I would describe it as creating (hand) identification problems for your opponents by increasing the range hands in which you take a specific action. I believe concept to betting, checking, and calling. This isn't really a hard or advanced concept, but was made difficult by the aejones post. All good players merge their ranges even if they don't know what merging ranges is.
