don't really like this trade at all...also, how do the mets match up that salary and if not, i would guess it would cost them a good prospect to get it done and on top of that, i don't want him replacing sosa...

I dunno if it would actually cost the Mets a good prospect. This would be more along the lines of a salary dump on the part of the ChiSox. Similar to the Shawn Green for Evan MacLane trade last year.

When it comes down to it, I think middle relief is the only spot we need help. Even this is mitigated by a few factors:

- if Duaner Sanchez has any chance of coming back effectively.

- Pedro coming back pushes Sosa into that role.

- Shoenweiss could lose a finger slicing a tomato.

At times, it seems like we could use a bat, but where?
1b: Delgado is crap, but we have no choice here.
2b: Valentin/Easley/Gotay is probably as good as anything else available
ss/3b: duh
CF: Beltran is hurt and slumping, but he's not going anywhere.
LF/RF: Even with Alou and Endy hurt, Green is doing fine, and we're loaded with young players who could be serious studs at these positions.
C: I don't particularly care for PLD, and I think it's a travesty that he's batting 2nd, but he's fine for a catcher, and Hippo is a good backup.

I have no problem with a starting 5 of Ollie/Maine/ElDuque/Glavine/Pedro for the long haul. In the pen, Wags has been absolutely fantastic this year, and while SS is dreadful, the rest of the group isn't too bad.

So why make a move for a redundant old pitcher who already sucked in NY once? If it doesn't cost anything fine, and Contrares does eat innings, but giving away anything of value for him would be really dumb, IMO.

1 or 2 wins in expectation is just a TON of ground to cover in half a season. I mean sure, as far as luck goes, Sosa may not give up a homer where Sele would in what happens to be a high leverage spot, but in general I doubt it would change much. Sosa also pitches to contact to some degree so bringing him in with runners on base won't really help a ton more than bringing Sele in(which they never do anyway for some reason). Anyways, in a perfect world the Mets would really upgrade 1st base(Teixeira if healthy?) or a corner OF position, but like you said this would be a little shortsighted since they are so deep at this position in the minors.

Well it's stopped raining here. So it should clear up in flushing in about 20 minutes if not sooner.
