That's why I like it - fewer locals.
It may only have a dozen tables or so, but it could fit a lot more if they crammed them together. There's just no need right now.

Locals know that for the cheep price of a buck or two they can use the valet and walk right into the poker room without having to walk a mile.

[/ QUOTE ]

PH has the worst valet on the Stip, long wait to drop off, long wait to pick up and ont he weekend you often have to grease them because you are not a hotel guest and they LOVE to limit valet to guests only.

FWIW I think Signature at MGM and the Stratoshere have two of the strongest valets. I am learning to love Caesars Colliseum valet too.

[/ QUOTE ]

The close valet at PH is hotel guests only 24x7, not just weekends.

Pig - I was there on Saturday night. They accepted my car at the front desk valet and there was no wait. Not sure where your getting that from.

But this was just my selfish list. If I had my druthers I'd also ban 2/4, 3/6, and NL1/2. Make people play for "real money" if they want to sit down.

[/ QUOTE ]

If you wanted to build to 4/8 and 5/10 and 6/12, you should just "ban" NL1/2 and NL1/3 and push the TV watchers and experimenters who have never played before to small limit games.

You probably need a critical support of x 3/6 tables regularly running before you have critical mass to regularly sustain a game one higher up. I presume getting a 4/8 game spread regularly is going to rely on a bunch of a sufficient number of bad fishy locals so that at any one time you have enough of them running good at the moment that they can afford to dump off their winnings one limit up. It should attractive for someone waiting for a 3/6 seat, which is why I think 4/8 as an intermediate step between 3/6 and 6/12 is a practical idea. I just have no idea what value x should have. I think it is going to be at least 4.

Of course, I'm not based in Vegas, so I don't know the dynamics there, such as how many small non-NLHE tables rooms are capable of supporting? Is there a base of locals who hate NL and would regularly patronize a room that tried to carve out a mostly limit niche?

I actually state this based on what I've seen in a couple other poker markets. Topeka, for instance, a city of 150K, spreads ONLY 4/8 and NL2/5 and they don't have many players at the desk saying "oh...I can't afford THAT". People play what's available. I also found that to be the case at Mirage and Rio--when they only had NL2/5, people played NL2/5 but soon as they offered NL1/2 all the fish switched.

But my desire for more money outta the fish is also completely selfish. I'm not claiming it would be "good for Vegas poker" to do this. It would be good for bav's bottom line. But I don't think it would hugely impact the player counts.

Oh yeah... and in the closing of rooms rumor mill is: "Harrah's is next". This from a Monte Carlo dealer who said it matter-of-factly. I mentioned "Hilton is closing" and he says "so is Harrah's". After further quizzing it turns out it's just a rumor he's heard, but he thinks it's true. (I don't, but what do I know.)

It's a half-mile plus. You have to go halfway round the miracle mile mall, and the through the casino.

[/ QUOTE ]

Not even close. It's a mile of shopping. Which is both sides of the mall and the 3 entrance hallways, ROFL. It's more like 1/8th. And I still hold to my maxim that people are lazy. Hell, stop by ABC on the way through for an energy drink if yer tired!

But my statement of valet still holds true. Use Paris and walk in the front door. It's a 30 second walk.

Count your paces next trip. It's not a half mile, but it probably is 1/4. MGM still loses, being about 3/8ths of a mile from a close garage spot to the poker room. Caesars and PH are both pretty bad, but I think trim about 1/8th of a mile off that hike. Wynn is the winner for shortest walk, TI is probably 2nd, Harrah's close behind.

And not all of us are without physical limitations on our ability to walk long distances. Don't just leap to the conclusion that people are lazy asses.

Geez, one would think that many an LV poker-player would be super trim and fit with all that walking they do.
Not such a horrible thing for a lot of those guys. Obviously inconvenient for some who have difficulty walking or...gasp...just want to play poker and aren't interested in cardio-vascular activuty.

hourly rake = (rake per hand) * (hands per hour)

Which is more responsible for the NL rake overall to be lower? The rake per hand, or the hands per hour?

[/ QUOTE ]

Hands per hour.

Qualitatively, that's what I would think (going into the tank, theatrics, etc). But good to know from someone measuring this for real.
