I have a feeling that by the time Ichiro retires, we'll be at a ponit where his Japanese numbers will be taken seriously in his HOF chances by voters.

[/ QUOTE ]

not even close.

Except the Hall of Fame isn't just about Mantle, Mays, and Dimaggio. You left out Cobb and Speaker, by the way. It's about Kirby Puckett, Richie Ashburn, Earl Averill, Earl Combes, Billy Hamilton, and Duke Snider, too. Bernie Williams fits perfectly with these guys, who were enshrined long ago.

Thome is in, he's basically a lock for 500 homers.

Bernie Williams has a 20 point advantage in on-base percentage despite playing longer, and playing nearly all of his games at center field.

I'd like to hear your reasoning as to why guys like Duke Snider, Earl Averill, Kirby Puckett, and Billy Hamilton are a lot better than Bernie Williams.

Well, Kirby's better because he loved the game more, and he was scrappy, and remember that Game 6 home run?

I also don't think Thome is a lock. No World Series, no serious MVP contention. I mean obviously he *should* get in, but the same clowns who vote on MVP vote on who gets into the Hall of Fame.

Edgar Martinez isn't going to make it.

It's funny that people are saying Ichiro is a lock and Bernie has no business making it in the same thread.

[/ QUOTE ]

Ichiro is sexier.

Bernie probably should be close, but I think his chances are a lot worse than Ichiro's. Kinda like with Jorge, somehow the spectre of the Yankees as an organization overshadows individual nonJeters.

Bernie should make some weird non hall of fame for managing to be the best player on the best team in the biggest city and still fly under the radar.

You guys really should not be evaluating players, especially all-time, with straight OPS.

OPS+ is a much better stat

straight OPS is flawed
