Doesn't seem so lousy now, does it?

[/ QUOTE ]

Get back to me in two years. Looks good now, but if they don't seriously contend for a title in the next two years, why do it? They are still a SP short, and Mike Hampton is not the answer.

[/ QUOTE ]

So if this deal wasn't a complete panacea then it was entirely worthless? Cool standard.

[/ QUOTE ]

I'm not saying they have to win it all. Right now they only have 3 reliable starting pitchers, and Smoltz's arm is about to fall off. There's nothing in the farm system(not sold on Reyes, he's too wild) that will be ready by the end of 2008. Then they lose Teixeira, Smoltz(if he's not done by then, I think he'll retire), Renteria, Hampton(Yay!) and possibly Chipper. I'm also assuming Cox will be gone at the end of 2008, he's already hinted at it. I don't know if Schuerholz will leave or retire or not, but he's working on one year contracts.

I guess I'm just saying this is unlike the Braves to throw that many prospects away for a 1 1/2 year rental.

I'm still very happy with the deal. Just trying to make sense of it.

This is a good deal now, 2 years, whenever. Atlanta will sogn him to a long term contract next season or in 09. No A.Jones or Smoltz by then. Colorado is paying the bulk of Hampton's contract. Money wont be a problem.

Salty was good, real good prospect. I guess he could have even played first regularly. Too bad he's a really catcher, a position a lot of teams don't have and desire. We still have McCann. I think we gave a lot for Mark, but he is a top tier 1b in the league and we had the worst production in the whole league at that position (I think the team was a combined 200 from the 1b position. As others have stated, due to Smoltz impending retirement, Andruw's expected leaving, Chipper's age, etc. the team is trying to win now in the current era. Thing is other than those players and Wickman who is terrible, the team has a good young fielding core (Escobar, McCann, Francouer, and others). Pitching needs to be worked on in the future, but that's true with almost any major league team.

I was talking about the bench-Salty-so-he-doesn't-get-hurt theory.

Now the Braves are front running for Dotel? Wow.

Who else do they have left?

I don't think you know the definition of "semantics."

Giving up three young prospects rather than JoJo Reyes is a big difference. As the resident ESPN genius writer, I think you should know that.
