Re: Best pop/rock band
[ QUOTE ]
If college radio liked it, it probably doesn't qualify. If college radio loved it, it certainly doesn't. [/ QUOTE ] Geez, that's too bad, because I think the Exploding Hearts would win this running away if half the band didn't die in a van crash. By that I mean they're not only great but I think they fit the exact description of what you want here. I also think the New Pornographers and Ted Leo (especially Ted Leo)are still very strong contenders, and I love the Hold Steady more than anyone else does, apparently. Nothing college rock? Um... let's see, the Strokes and Franz Ferdinand already mentioned. Older White Stripes (i.e. the first 3 albums). I haven't delved into all-time yet because I don't think it's much use to the list if they aren't still making music, and then it just becomes "name your favorite band". That said, of the ones listed I tink the Kinks are probably closest to fulfilling what you're looking for. The Who is also a good choice. |

If college radio liked it, it probably doesn't qualify. If college radio loved it, it certainly doesn't. [/ QUOTE ] Why this criteria? I don't listen to any radio but you seem to be implying by this and your love for the uber-popular bands that if they are not a super well-known-play-in-arenas-make-millions band they don't rock. That could not be further from the truth, IMO. Don't you think the best rock would come from young kids who are all full of hormones, pissed off, drunk and out to have a good time? Personally, I would take them over all the 30-50 year old millionaires that clog the corporate rock airwaves. How about: The Swingin' Neckbreakers, Hot Snakes, Black Halos, Federation X, The Drags, Dillinger Four. All of them rock hard. KJS |

Re: Best pop/rock band
I agree with KKF that this thread is a bit retarded, such a broad category. Anyway some that come to mind:
Beatles + solo beatles - my quick glance over the thread didn't see them, some reason they are ineligble? Rolling stones - same comment U2 Killers Jet Coldplay CCR The band RHCP The who Wilco - probably violates the non radiohead flaming lips thing |

Re: Best pop/rock band
Maybe they don't 'rock' all that hard, but for toe-tapping, head-bobbing, sing-along-in-your-car catchy pop, for my money it's:
