Why are we assuming Soriano is only 31? [/ QUOTE ] Because he's not 29 like he would have been had he not already gone through age-gate. |

Dynasty:
Soriano is a not a limited commodity - several players with his PECOTA projections come available on the market every year. There is absolutely no standpoint from which this is a good move. Not even if revenues do somehow double even though the American market for baseball has begun to dry up as fans age out of the key demographics. |

did anyone catch this gem?
[ QUOTE ] "He likes the leadoff spot and there is none better," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said in an interview with WGN Radio. He called Soriano "a young man who can get on base and steal some bases and hit the ball for extra base power and hit it for a homer. We are talking about the best leadoff hitter in all of baseball." [/ QUOTE ] taking stock of this statement, soriano is not young, can't get on base, not the best leadoff hitter in baseball, but he is a man, can steal bases, and can hit homers. so technically lou is half right. |

[ QUOTE ]
This is exactly what happened in 1999-2000! Everybody said revenues are going to double, so let's go out and sign some HUGE contracts. Well, revenues did double, but it didn't happen overnight. It took eight years. Meanwhile, in years four five and six, many teams were left with many BAD contracts and drove the price of similar calibur players down. For example, Manny signed for $20m/yr, three years later, Vlad signed for $15m/yr. Do you think revenues were lower three years later? [/ QUOTE ] this is a really ignorant post. first of all, a 120% increase in eight years means a 100% growth in revenue in under 7 years, which is really phenomenal. second, all free agent contracts look really bad by the last year. that's what happens when you have a market where 90% of players get more money and years than they're worth, and when most contracts are backloaded. third, vlad signed for a lot less money and years than manny because his back troubles were a big concern and teams were worried they would be left with a mo vaughn-type albatross, not because manny's contract drove his price down. those concerns might have been overblown, but they were legitimate. |

Why are we assuming Soriano is only 31? [/ QUOTE ] Hey Pudge. Now I'm really worried how much it will cost the Jays to keep Wells next year. How much do you think the Soriano deal will drive the market of for Wells? We can't lose Wells? |

[ QUOTE ]
How is this similar at all to signing someone who is, at best, a 31-year-old top 75 player for EIGHT YEARS? [/ QUOTE ] i agree that soriano is one of the most overrated players in baseball, but come on. i doubt you can even name 30 active players who have one year of 10 WARP3 in the past five years, let alone the three soriano has. if the deal is really for 5 years 95 with (non-player) options, it is not nearly as bad as everyone is making it out to be. at 10% contract inflation, not even accounting for all the newly available money this offseason, it would be like giving him a 5 year-60 mil contract in the winter of 2000. |

taking stock of the thread, a few things become clear:
- a lot of people on this board love to mock the cubs - almost no one can accurately compare economics between two different environments - a lot of people actually think soriano is far worse than he is, which is really shocking for a player who's that overrated by the public - apparently no one is paying attention to the report that the deal is 5 years with options. this also happened two years ago with magglio's contract, which everyone viewed as a 7 year deal even though it will never reach that point i spent a large portion of the day mocking this contract, and i still think you're all being unreasonable. |
