Every sabremetric related material I have read has minimized the role of managers, and yet you sabremetric guys keep complaining about every little decision they make.

[/ QUOTE ]

it's not about how much something matters in the long run. it's about something being very clearly wrong, and the manager still does it.

if i raise with 72o UTG+1 one time tonight and never do it again, the results of the hand won't really matter at the end of the year. that doesn't mean i should do it. batting neifi perez second is like doing this, except i accidentally mucked my 7 and can only play one card.

i felt the need to blog the stupidity at work here. in a way, it's amusing to see the manager of the year get clearly outmanaged in the playoffs, yet be up 2-0.

casey being out for exactly the length of the ALCS is the worst possible result. now they won't have shelton in the world series either.

[/ QUOTE ]

can someone elaborate on this plz?

if casey is given a clean bill of health for the world series, why should leyland put shelton on the roster? after all, he "had" to use both his second and third utility infielders in this series, so he has to keep both in the world series too.

actually, maybe leyland will realize he needs pinch hitters in three of those games. so there is hope for chris after all, if they need three or four pinch hitters in the same game.

1) We got them right where we want them. Over confident.

[/ QUOTE ]

I seriously doubt that Oakland was anywhere near overconfident.

2) Shaky defense watches other teams celebrate championships.

[/ QUOTE ]

That same defense was virtually flawless in the division series.

I'm cautiously optimistic that we can take two in Detroit and let me go see some more postseason baseball, and there's no one in baseball I'd rather have on the hill for us friday than Harden.

[/ QUOTE ]

um... why?

Should be starting Haren or Blanton?

Harden's very good when he's on, but who knows if he's going to be in game condition. Also wondering about how 92 year old Kenny Rogers deals with pitching in the cold and wind.

Good thing the game's not scheduled for today -- the wind is really whipping.

They moved the game Friday to 4:30, so that should help a bit with the weather. Its 38 and snow flurries and the wind is howling outside right now. Maybe I'm not smart, but it sure seems like if you are going to throw Harden, you would want to pitch him at home when the weather is warm. They've known all week that the weather was going to crappy here this weekend.

And on the oh [censored] scale, Zumaya having a sore wrist is about an 8.5 of 10 (especially coming back to the D when its going to be cold). I knew something wasnt right when Grilli and Ledezma got extended time last night (though they both pitched pretty decent).

When Harden is healthy, he's dominant, up there in the class with Santana/Halladay. However, Harden is on the a's, he's our best player, and he's been out all season. Frankly, I miss watching him pitch, and I want to see him get the chance to pitch in the playoffs.

By all accounts he's fully healthy. He apparently took it personally that he didn't get to start game 2, and he's very very well rested. Basically, he wants to get out there, and he wants to strike out everyone, and I respect that and love seeing his kind of intensity from players on my team.
