How about Bjork? Funnily enough the tunes which are potentially the most uplifting can also be the saddest. Like alcohol, good music heightens your existing emotional state. So Hyperballad, Unravel, Pagan Poetry make me happier when I'm already happier, and sadder when I'm feeling sad.

Oh, and how about Van Morrison's Astral Weeks? Now there's a classic...

I didnt go through the thread, but the obv most depressing song made is Samuel Barber's "Adagio For Strings."

If you are really depressed, I also find that "Mad World" makes it worse.

Leonard Cohen, in his early years as a performer, was so moved by his own depressing songs that many times he sang on stage while crying!

Seems So Long Ago, Nancy.

Famous Blue Raincoat.

Chelsea Hotel. (about his encounter with Janis Joplin who made quite an impression on him)

How about some Roy Orbison? Perhaps we've heard them too many times; shame, since 'Crying' is such a perfect song.

Does a thread about depressing songs inevitably turn into a thread about best break-up songs?

It's such a crappy day here in Michigan, coming up with depressing songs is easy. Here's a few off the top o' my noggin:

Dolorean: Jenny Place Your Bets
Jane's Addiction: Jane Says
The Connells: 74-75
Terry Jacks: Seasons in the Sun
Joy Division: New Dawn Fades
The Jam: A Town Called Malice
Harry Chapin: Cat's in the Cradle
Ringo Starr: Photograph
Korn: Daddy
