lol @ Gwynn.

Helton swings at a pitch 4 inches off the plate and loops a single to left, and here's Gwynn (keep in mind, Gwynn would hit balls 2" off the ground for singles, and was a career like .338 hitter)

"That is why Helton is a career .331 hitter. That's just a great piece of hitting right there, taking a pitch off the plate and looping it 120 feet for a single."

lol Tony. What about the 9 out of 10 times he pops up to SS? Moran. I like Tony but praising a dude for getting lucky like that on a pitchers pitch is pretty silly.

what? you're really stretching it here. Gwynn has forgotten more about baseball than you'd ever know, so you criticizing him when it comes to hitting is very LOL. The ability to take a bad pitch (good pitcher's pitch) and turn it into a base hit is a skill shared by the great hitters, look at Vlad.

I think the 2p2 all "announcers are idiots" fad has just jumped the shark.

I completely agree that people tend to be overly critical of announcers. I'm as guilty as anyone. It's probably more difficult than people who have never done it realize.

For what it's worth, I think Tony Gwynn is one of the good commentators in the game. Furthermore, if there is one subject he is an expert on, it's hitting.

However, I feel the phrase "jump the shark" has "jumped the shark."

By the way, did Bill Simmons make that up? The first time I ever saw that phrase was in one of his columns.

I think it's a safe assumption that Tony knows more about hitting than you.

Helton isn't a good hitter because he can get lucky on swinging at a bad pitch (like Gwynn, Vlad, etc.)

I thought he was a good hitter because he walks a ton and presumably, limits his swings to pitches that he can hit with authority. Not 120' bloopers, which is what Gwynn did a lot, swinging at pitches 2" off the ground.*

Gwynn BA/OBP .338/.388
Helton BA/OBP .332/.430!!!

*I know the average age of this forum is like 17, but if anyone watched baseball in the 80s you know Tony would get singles on pitches 12" out of the zone.

It was cheaper for Denver residents to fly Southwest Airlines to Phoenix and buy tix to games 1 and 2 than to buy tix for games 3-5. Hell, they had $9 seats available for...$9.

Holy crap. Standing room only tickets for the 2005 NLCS in Houston were $34 apiece. And Houston has cheap tickets, generally. For reference, Upper Deck is normally $7 during the season.
