Over the last 3 seasons, this has turned into a very good rivalry. It is especially exciting for me, as I spent my first 16 years in STL, and would have NEVER guessed that a rivalry between these two teams would ever formulate.

[/ QUOTE ]

i don't think there is a rivalry between them, they just tend to be the 2 best teams in the nl central. that's competition.

some people wig out over aceshigh's comments here on 2+2, but that's 2+2. the only rivalry that's talked about in st. louis is cubs/cards.

[/ QUOTE ]

OK, but in Houston, the only rivalry talked about is with the Cardinals, ehh, and the Braves due to the amount of times they KO'd the Astros in the late-90's. But the Cards is better b/c it's the same division and back-to-back close NLCS series'. The Cubs are a non-factor in this city. And being born in STL in 1979, as far back as I can remember, they were never really a factor against the Cards either. I think the Cubs/Cards rivalry has a lot more to do with proximity and the fact that Cubs fans like to travel to STL, get drunk, and get into fights.

Isn't that how all rivalries start

rivalry as in yankees/sox, or rivalry as in "this is our main competitor"? although it's not as well-known outside the areas, cubs/cards is exactly like yankees/sox.

i like to think fans in the midwest are at least a little smarter/more reserved than the videos i've seen of yankees-sox games.

i've had mixed experiences at busch wearing cubs gear. half the time the cards fans just ignore me and watch the game, the other half they start making UNC chants when they found out i'm an illini. certainly better than the fans at a florida-fsu game.

every cards game i attended at wrigley in 2005 involved at least one person not-so-subtlely wearing a red sox world champs t-shirt. there's a pretty good chance they bought it specifically to wear to that game, too.

it's a good rivalry that would be a great one if it wasn't so imbalanced.

For what it's worth, the best baseball game I've ever been to (even better than the one World Series game) was Yankees-Sox in Fenway circa 2003. It was so much fun.

I don't have much more to add. Oh, except that even after a 9 game winning streak and St. Louis' utter collapse, the Astros are still a big dog to make the playoffs again/still. If that's not enough to convince Aceshigh that they were a gigantic longshot a month ago, I don't know what can.
