I honestly can't [censored] imagine why Charlie would go to [Alfonseca], even with the fact that Geary et al. had thrown so much. I'd take a 50% Geoff Geary over a 100% Antonio Alfonseca any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

I really think Manuel decided to take a chance and go with him in order the non-walking-dead in the bullpen a rest.

If the Phils had gotten a bigger inning in the top of the 6th when they pinch-hit for Hamels (and I think Cholly was really counting on that) then he could also have gotten what he wanted and taken a chance on Alfonseca.

As it was, he got neither. And on top of that, he wound up pitching Geary AND Lohse anyway.

that's the part that was maddening. Geary and Lohse were both available, yet he went to Alfonseca first, left him in way too long, imo, and then (as you said) had to use them anyway. I bet Condrey could have gone an inning. i just don't understand why Charlie would have any faith at all in Alfonseca. Jose Mesa for [censored]'s sake, John Ennis, just anybody but Alfonseca. all of his appearances are the same, it seems. he goes 2-0 on a batter, throws a fastball down the middle which is fouled directly back, gets to 3-1, grooves another fastball which is smoked. then he walks a guy on four pitches, and then choose your own adventure after that involving no outs being recorded.

i know their arms must be worn out in that bullpen after this trip, but with the off day tomorrow.. I just don't understand how somebody besides Alfonseca could have been chosen to get to Gordon/Myers.

i can't be the only one that almost gets a bit nauseous when I hear that Alfonseca is throwing in the bullpen, can i?

Well, they do keep battling. That ninth inning showed that. It just looked like both Helms and Werth were trying to win it on one wing of the bat.

OK, get your rest, Phils, huge homestand coming up.

Some of those whiffs, and 3-11 wRISP is inexcusable.

Yea they played terrible last game. They faced Joel Hanrahan, Tony Batista played 1st, D'Angelo Jimenez played short, and they lost. That shouldnt happen. Either way, good boy Milton Bradley, lets go Phillies.

Nice to see that this Nationals team is game enough to also give the Mets trouble.

Here's hoping the Nats do that the next couple games, and get it out of their system before Friday.

Manny Acta (Nats manager) has done a great job. That team sucks but plays real hard. He also hates the Mets which is good for the phillies. Lets go giants.

This was a gift from SF. I don't think they can expect them to beat SD again, so the Phils really need to take care of business from here on out
