I'm not a big baseball fan... so can someone explain to me, why is Sandy Koufax on that list?

[/ QUOTE ]

Go look at his stats and you should be able to tell me. Only 2300 IP, and of that, only about 1200 of it was really dominant. Plus, he played in front of a great defense and in a pitcher's stadium suited to his pitching style.

[/ QUOTE ]

so he is a pitcher with inflated numbers (compared to today, not to his contemporaries), i still think it'd be difficult to overrate koufax or ryan. considering that practically noone puts them close to martinez and clemens.

edit : wording. it came out wrong.

Clemente is an icon, and it's hard to get a grasp on people's opinions of his playing ability.

[/ QUOTE ]

Clemente was a great hitter in a tough era for hitters. So it's hard to look at his numbers and see the "greatness", i.e. there's no 50 HR seasons or 140 RBI seasons. Also, he is probably slightly over-rated due to his arm. His outfield throws were so stunning that it's easy to react to them more than his more significant contributions.

Nolan Ryan is the most overrated pitcher, and its not really close. Most overrated positional player...thats a tough question. Maybe Joe Dimaggio, even though he was great. Maybe Ripken Jr, even though he was great. Probably a guy like Rizzuto or Mazeroski, based on hall of fame voting (or, Jim Rice, if he ever gets in)

Ryan is a very easy choice. Who's a better pitcher: Blyleven or Ryan? They're both similar but nearly everyone will tell you it's Ryan.

[/ QUOTE ]

couldn't that be because they simply don't know who Blyleven is, and never even seen his stat sheet?

Roger Clemens

he lacks heart and character. He's just lucky Riviera made up for a few of these things to get Roger his rings.

I will break my rule and add a hall of famer.

Kirby Puckett.

He got in because his career was cut short, but that little fat guy hardly did anything numbers-wise to merit his enshrinement.

Kirby Puckett is my most overrated player upon further review.

I was thinking that he fit in the did more with less thread. He was a tremendous competitor. I definetly would not put him in this thread.

This right here is blasphemy, but I'll do you one better; Joe DiMaggio was more overrated than Kirby was. Joe was a media sensation, called the best of his time while playing with obviously better players. He got elected greatest living player despite those others (Williams, Musial) still being alive.

I'd have loved to see him play, but he got injured a lot, didn't take a lot of walks and his career was short.

You can be very, very good and still be overrated. Most people would not correctly rank Frank Robinson vs. Roberto Clemente as players, Clemente is widely regarded as an inner-circle type among casual fans when he was actually a pretty run of the mill HOF OFer. Dying young helped, but he was a naturally overrated player(lots of singles, good OF arm, friendly).

People have already defended Koufax and Ryan as overrated.
I was only going to put actually good players on the list(Well, and Ray Schalk, but he's in the HOF), it's impossible to figure out how overrated Brad Aumus is compared to some other terrible player people decided was OK in the past.
