Re: Ryan Howard Wins NL MVP

mosdef, while your stats are fine for arguing against clutch hitting, you fail to realize that the MVP award is based on that "small sample size." Even if his career "clutch" #'s aren't off from his normal #'s, .397 w/RISP and .435 w/RISP w/2 outs are pretty crazy #s. Given its the MVP award for THIS season, I can see how people would find them relevant. [/ QUOTE ] Hi, Yes, I agree. I was not commenting on the MVP race per se, just the idea that Pujols is super clutch, rather than just awesome and lucky with RISP this year. I agree that for MVP you should count "luck" - higher BABIP, RISP, RBI, etc. Win Shares does a pretty good job of that, with defense included as well. |

[ QUOTE ] Morneau just won AL mvp. [/ QUOTE ] ZOMG LORD JETER DIDNT WIN!!!! here come the conspiracy theories [/ QUOTE ] Jeter isn't even the best SS on his own team. They should trade him for starting pitching, and then watch A-Rod hit 50 HR's playing short. |

Abreu,
Since third is so much more physically draining and he's tired when he gets up to bat. Jeter is a lifer in pinstripes at shortstop. A-Rods production off of short>>>>>Jeter's production off of short. Pujols is obviously selfish. If he would hit .20 pts higher for a career he'd probably increase his numbers to greatest ever contention instead of a simple HoFer. What an idiot. |

Re: Ryan Howard Wins NL MVP
A good point from Baseball Prospectus (referring to how often people care about RBI's):
[ QUOTE ] If voters are going to put all their eggs in one basket, they're going to need to dig further down into that basket. If that basket is going to be RBI-–as it too often is-–then attention must be paid to how the players arrived at their RBI figures. For instance, Howard batted with more men on base than anybody else in the National League: 509. That's over 80 more than Pujols and Berkman, 99 more than fifth-place vote getter Miguel Cabrera, and 132 more than fourth-place finisher Carlos Beltran. [/ QUOTE ] |

Re: Ryan Howard Wins NL MVP
Nice post.
So often we talk about "protection." People fail to remember that the people who hit before you have a big effect on your numbers (mostly RBIs...duh) as well. It's nice having Utley and Abreu hitting in front of you. |
