Re: what to drink to seem sophisticated
It's funny to see who can sound the most rad with what should be avoided. Seriously, Whiskey-Coke is for pussies who don't care how stupid I think they look drinking it. Be a man and order that stuff rich people say you should drink.

Re: what to drink to seem sophisticated
[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] As a bartender, I personally consider jack/rum/whatever and coke to be girly. Or at least college freshman type amateur-drinker drinks. [/ QUOTE ] Thank you. Jack and Coke/Rum and Coke is for rednecks or amateur drinkers. [/ QUOTE ] This is the second time someone has used "amateur drinker" to insult people who drink Gin and Tonic type drinks. Have you people considered that we are trying to keep our status for the drinking Olympics? I think the bartender guy likes people who order straight liquor because that's less work for him. [/ QUOTE ] I didn't say that. G and T's are classic and old school, nothing amateur hour or girly about them at all, IMO. Ordering a jack and coke, however, is usually a dead giveaway that the person ordering it doesn't drink much/is pretty young. This is b/c the only reason to order something and coke is because you don't like the taste of alcohol, since coke pretty much obliterates the alcohol taste. And I thought my opinion on this was relevant since I'm a bartender and the OP's question was what to drink to look sophisticated. As a general rule, it looks sophisticated to order drinks that demonstrate you like the taste of alcohol, since it is an acquired taste. That said, I agree with what others have said--you should order whatever you want to drink. I don't care if you like drinking white wine spritzers out of a coconut, and I certainly don't judge people based on what they drink. But if you like girly/amateur-hour drinks, be prepared for people to call a spade a spade. |

[ QUOTE ] Gin and Tonic is a good choice... if you are a retired grand-mother living in Florida. Scotch... single malts neat; Laphroaig, Old Pulteney, Speyside, something interesting, pretend you know your [censored] even if you don't, don't order Macallan or JW. Or if you are a noob go for blends on the rocks. [/ QUOTE ] this is a stupid post. have you ever even BEEN to a bar? [/ QUOTE ] Agreed, he lists some individual scotches and then "Speyside" - a region where something like 1/2 the distilleries in Scotland are located. And pretending you know something about the subject when you don't is a surefire way to look like a poser douche. Also, other poster, why shouldn't someone order Macallan? |

Re: what to drink to seem sophisticated
[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] A decent beer is fine... mixed drinks are for girly-men. Sam Adams or Heineken or Amstel Light or something quality IMO. The only acceptable mixed drink is a James Bond style martini and unless you're supercool you can't pull that one off. [/ QUOTE ] Is this a joke or do you really consider jack and coke, rum and coke, gin and tonic, etc. girly drinks? [/ QUOTE ] As a bartender, I personally consider jack/rum/whatever and coke to be girly. Or at least college freshman type amateur-drinker drinks. As far as OP goes, my vote is for a nice vodka on the rocks. It's kind of hardcore and says you know how to drink, but not in a "look at me drinking 19 year old scotch" kind of showoffy way.
