Bobby Darin went from pop crooner to folk singer
Ice T's transformation to the body count days was not that drastic, but definately targeted towards a different audience. also, didn't slash put out a jazz guitar album? |

Re: Bands that drastically changed musical styles
The Who - In the early days, they were doing a lot of Motown covers, and copping Kinks-style riffs. By the time of Who's Next, they were a completely different band, whereas the Stones never really strayed too far from their blooozy roots.

Agree with the Dylan electric- this set was released on CD several years ago and is great listening. And I think that the Beatles drastically but gradually changed. I don't know the album that immediately preceeded Rubber Soul, but I can guess it was the same pop stuff they were playing in the early years. After that, the transition to Revolver and Sgt. Pepper completed the drastic change. If you compare "Meet the Beatles" to "Abbey Road", its pretty drastic. thank goodness. Re: Bands that drastically changed musical styles
I'd add Ween, though their changes are more conscious, album-by-album experiments than a real change of aesthetics;
and Bruce Springsteen, though he really seems to oscillate between moody, "Nebraska" Bruce and "E Street Band" Bruce. Tom Waits, too - from beat hipster crooner to growling junkyard maestro. |
