Re: .999~ = 1, Agree?
[ QUOTE ]
"My feeling is that 99.99~% is not 100%, by definition of 100%. I understand the proofs, and they're convincing, but I can't shake the feeling that .99~ is not equal to 1. It's like two different languages, whole numbers and anything "to infinity," 3rd dimension and 4th dimension. Yes, for all practical purposes and for math problems that can't be visualized or imagined, it works. But in real life, .99~ is not 1." [/ QUOTE ] i'm normally a pretty easy-going guy, but some of the responses in this thread are so stupid that they make me angry. honest to god angry. LOOK AT THE PROOF(S) YOU [censored] MORONS! |

Yah, whatever. A lot of people insisting 0.999...=1 and similar is proof to some, and not to others. Let's cut the higher maths out of OOT though. And poker is about probabilities, not calculus. [/ QUOTE ] the proofs are proof to everyone WHO BELIEVES IN ALGEBRA! ALGEBRA [censored] WORKS! |

Well, I don't accept .333... forever equals 1/3
If I'm wrong, what do you care? Oh, take this to SMP. |

[/ QUOTE ] x = 0.9999... 10x = 9.9999... 10x - x = 9.9999... - 0.9999... 9x = 9 x = 1. fine, just tell me which step is not valid. it's not that i care if you're wrong, i care that you insist on remaining wrong in the face of proof that you're wrong. |

The mathematicians here are coming across as pompous, I was arguing about this pomposity, but you guys keep banging away at the maths and how people that aren't familiar with your proofs/constructs are pathetic/morons etc You need to grow up a bit. But you win. Just, next time, take these math things in SMP, where they should be. |

It isn't as simple as algebra because simple-appearing algrebraic proofs can be flawed if there are underlying definitional assumptions that are wrong. There was a period in the history of mathematics when many theoretical mathematicians were uneasy about calculus precisely because of paradoxes of infinity such as this one. It was only after a logical foundation was laid to provide the proper context for dealing with infinity that this problem became easy. The ...'s in your .9999999... weren't always well enough defined. |

this is seventh grade math. [/ QUOTE ] Listen, you insist you're right. Do you also get that when numbers aren't the same, like 0.99999... and 1.00000...., it's not entirely reasonable to see them as different. Is that entirely non-obvious to you? Can you not see that? |
