Re: Arizona State Poker Championship - Satellites are running

[ QUOTE ] Eh, I am kinda glad they sold out. Now I can stop worrying about trying to satty into it, and play real poker. That tourney is going to be a the biggest +EV day of the year for every competent player [/ QUOTE ] I'm thinking I wouldn't sell my seat for less than $2k. Isn't that a reasonable expectation for a decent, not great, tourney donk? [/ QUOTE ] Judging from the play in my Sat the tourney is going to be populated by horrid players. I'm mediocre at best. But here's the thing: Just as I once read a Nascar driver say that he felt safer driving 200 mph on the track than 60 on the freeway with all the 'amatuers' this tourney is going to be one rocky ride. The winner is going to have to dodge a hail of bullets and not just hope for the one or two usual suck-outs to win. btw: In my post mentioning that CAZ is losing money on the tourney and therefor thanking them for hosting it I forgot to mention how much the dealers themselves are 'losing'. The tip pool (even at 5% if it gets that high) isn't enough to compensate them for their time. |

Re: Arizona State Poker Championship - Satellites are running
Also if you look at the structure carefully, it doesn't allow for as much play as one expects. After 4 hours the blinds are at 400/800/50 meaning anyone who hasn't been able to get anything going is playing all-in poker. In fact, even after 2-3 hours the play is going to be really really fast. They very sneakly took out some important levels. And with 4.5million chips in play, and blinds in the 2/4k - 4/8k region by day 2....I'd expect nothing but pre-flop poker.
That said, for $1000...and $250,000 on the line, it might just be worth it! |

Re: Arizona State Poker Championship - Satellites are running
Yeah, I don't think there's any prayer the tip pool get to 5%. Call me tight, but if I win $250k I don't think I'll be tipping $12.5k.
The irony is, the bigger the payout the lower the tip % will be. When I win $370 and tip $20 that's over 5%. In fact, it's about 9% of my winnings after buy in. I've won the Tues/Wed tourny twice and each time I ask Dave on the side what the proper tip size is. One, with no chop (believe it or not) I tipped $150. One we chopped to $3k each and I tipped $100. I understand that's only about 3%. But then I always throw Dave $20 or $50. But I just can't see tipping $12k. |

Re: Arizona State Poker Championship - Satellites are running
The structure is not great, but it's not awful either. Good luck trying to convince CAZ mgmt to implement any changes. I've tried showing them structures from other comparable ($1k) events and their feeling is "you get lots of play - you get TEN THOUSAND CHIPS!" as if that automatically meant it was a good structure.
Other misc. comments: * There is a strong rumor that once the new facility is built they will have a WPT event as well as preliminaries(multiple weeks of events) * Little advertising necessary since it is virtually guaranteed to sell out. Yesterday afternoon Dave was announcing about once/hour "45 seats left" then "38 seats left" and so on. They didn't think it would make it to Monday. |

Re: Arizona State Poker Championship - Satellites are running
Eh, I wouldn't expect much with no NL. At the Bay 101 Shooting Star there was very little play from the pros other than Doug Lee, because the biggest game they had was 5-200 spread limit with a $1000 cap. That game stayed busy though, from what I saw and heard.

Re: Arizona State Poker Championship - Satellites are running
A major tournament would be cool, but I don't see it happening with the $150 bet-size limit in this state.
I'm going to CAZ tomorrow to start warming up for the big one. I will try and wake up early enough to play for a couple hours first and get the stamps for the 11am tournament. I usually play 3-6 stud in those morning sessions since I am barely awake. If I last a while in the morning tourney, I might stay and play the evening one also. |

Re: Arizona State Poker Championship - Satellites are running
I truly don't understand the reasoning behind this $150 bet rule...especially when you can bet $500 at blackjack! Can someone provide the legislators explanation for this, because I've yet to hear a logical one.

People can play 6 hands at a time for $500 a pop and blackjack plays very quickly. The only explanation I know of is that the casino and state would rather they had the suckers' money than us. |
