I've always been under the impression that the song was intented to be bad and the band was supposed to be this mock boy band. I didn't think they were actually serious. Am I wrong here?

As far as I know, it was a serious thing. I don't give boy bands enough credit to be able to metagame at this level. Besides, MTV did a joke boy band called 2gether, and then the goddamn [censored] bitch 13-year-old girls rendered satire impossible by causing one of the 2gether songs to rocket up the countdown on TRL. It was quietly the worst moment in the history of music.
