Why would the Indians trade a player (Garko) who is a year younger, $8.7M cheaper and under control longer, and producing similar offense for Texeira, without asking Texas to throw in extra prospects to even out the deal?

Does Garko have terrible defensive problems or is his year just a total fluke?

Garko's a good secondary player, an above average 1B. He's not a star.

If you thought Garko was good for a 125 OPS+ and Texiera a 140 OPS+, would you trade them straight up knowing you have Garko under control for more years and he's $9M a year cheaper?

What future OPS+ do you expect from a 26 year old above average first baseman?

What future OPS+ do you expect from a 27 year old with an OPS+ of about 135 over the last 5 years?

Where am I far off track? Not being sarcastic or leveling, clearly Tex is much more highly rated by everyone, but I'm trying to understand why...

You may be overrating Ryan Garko. You are definitely underrating Teixeira; his WARP3 was 10.1 in 05 and 8.7 last season in an off year, and most people agree his defense is superb. I haven't heard much about Garko's D, but BP's defensive metrics hate him FWIW.

Right.

Teixiera is probably a top 50 player. Top 15 is high, admittedly, but his WARP totals don't lie.
