Another one of my favorite Springsteen songs lyrics is "Wreck on the Highway". Bruce just has a knack for taking feelings I've had personally (in this case the fear of one day losing my wife) and turning them into a story that explains all those feelings perfectly. The last verse just gets me every time:

Last night I was out driving
Coming home at the end of the working day
I was riding alone through the drizzling rain
On a deserted stretch of a county two-lane
When I came upon a wreck on the highway

There was blood and glass all over
And there was nobody there but me
As the rain tumbled down hard and cold
I seen a young man lying by the side of the road
He cried Mister, won't you help me please

An ambulance finally came and took him to Riverside
I watched as they drove him away
And I thought of a girlfriend or a young wife
And a state trooper knocking in the middle of the night
To say your baby died in a wreck on the highway

Sometimes I sit up in the darkness
And I watch my baby as she sleeps
Then I climb in bed and I hold her tight
I just lay there awake in the middle of the night
Thinking 'bout the wreck on the highway

Springsteen has a ton, but one of my favorites currently (mostly because of the way he sings it):

[After an encounter with a prostitute, while lamenting a past love:]

She bought me another whiskey
Said "here's to the best you ever had"
We laughed and made a toast
It wasn't the best I ever had
It wasn't even close

you got me sold
devil’s tongue speaks so softly
but i've got my soul
and i’ll keep that because i know it’s worth

I believe my humor's wearin down

I know I can be colorful
I know I can be grey
I know this loser's livin fortunate
but I know you will love me either way.

Is she really goin out with him
is she really gonna take him home tonite
is she really goin out with him
if my eyes dont deceive me
there's somethin goin wrong around here
(every guy has to relate to this at least a little)

And when I hung up the phone it occured to me
he'd grown up just like me yeh
my boy was just like me

From one of the masters (IMHO), John Prine. I just love the basis for this song, the phrase "Angel From Montgomery," which used to be an Alabama phrase referring to a last minute pardon from the governor.

I am an old woman
Named after my mother
My old man is another
Child that's grown old

If dreams were thunder
And lightnin' was desire
This old house would'a burned down
A long time ago

Make me an angel, that flies from Montgomery
Make me a poster, of an old rodeo
Just give me one thing, I can hold onto
To believe in this living is just a, hard way to go

When I was a young girl
I had me a cowboy
He wasn't much to look at
Just a free ramblin' man

Aw, but that was a long time
And no matter how I try
Those years they just flow by
Like a broken-down dam

Make me an angel, that flies from Montgomery
Make me a poster, of an old rodeo
Just give me one thing, I can hold onto
To believe in this living is just a, hard way to go

There's flies in the kitchen
I can hear 'em a-buzzin
But I ain't done nothin
Since I woke up today

How the hell can a person
Go to work in the mornin'
And come home in the evenin'
And have nothin' to say?

Make me an angel, to fly from Montgomery
Make me a poster, of an old rodeo
Just give me one thing, I can hold onto
To believe in this living is just a, hard way to go

All that glitters isn't gold

All we are is dust in the wind

We are all just bricks in the wall

Manic depression's a frustrating mess

You can't always get what you want

It's a hard rain's gonna fall

We're still running against the wind

Life goes on after the thrill of living is gone

"they like to get you in a compromising position"

"I fight authority, authority always wins"

One more lyric from Farrar that seems to bode well with these lines.

Long way from happiness, in a three hour away town, whisky bottle over Jesus, not forever, just for now.

Idiot wind blowing like a circle around my skull
From the Grand Coulee Dam to Capitol
Idiot wind blowing every time you move you teeth
You're an idiot babe.
It's a wonder that you still know how to breathe.
