I think its because if they insult me directly I can say something back, whereas if they call me "boss" it just slips by.

It bugs me because I'm a former correctional officer and "chief" and "boss" are how convicts commonly address CO's. I don't like being reminded of those days.

If someone calls me one of those names I'll ask them if they're a convict because they're talking like a convict. Pretty sure "dawg" has a prison origin to it also.
