[ QUOTE ]
He's done too much as a character actor to have four in a row, but as the lead or key supporting actor in My Dinner with Andre, Vanya on 42nd Street, The Princess Bride, and Manhattan, I get a kick out of Wally Shawn. I should also mention a co-star in Vanya: Julianne Moore who never seems to turn in a bad performance. And, playing himself, or a version of himself, I kinda like Woody Allen. [/ QUOTE ] Wally Shawn is a good one. I always look forward to his appearance in a movie, and it can make the difference between seeing it or not. He's always fun. Did a great appearance in Taxi, too, one of the best episodes of the show was all him. He was dating Elaine, and was hilarious trying to get the kids to like him through such unorthodox avenues as outright cash bribery. He was so desperate and lovable. He was also in the play that I think he wrote, Lemon and Aunt Dan or something like that, or Aunt Lemon and Dan, whatever. Supposedly excellent play made for a reasonable movie of a play, and I should see it. |

[ QUOTE ]
I don't think, despite the competition being good, that it rose to the level of Lemmon's performance. [/ QUOTE ] That's pretty much how I felt. All of the performances that year were worthy but I found Lemmons to be truely phenominal and one of the best ever. Then again it's only my opinion and apparently the academy didn't agree |

Although I wouldn't say his entire body of work is all that impressive, he has been great over the span I've listed. Particularly impressive is the range of roles and the contrast between The Machinist and Batman Begins where he undergoes a massive change in physical appearance in a very short period of time.
