I liked this ep a lot.

I think the writers threw some serious misdirection at us. I know we're supposed to believe that Penny would've been there if Desmond let Charlie die. But why the hell would Penny (a woman of unlimited financial resources) be piloting her own helicopter? Alone. In the middle of uncharted territory. It makes WAY more sense that the woman was sent as a scout by Penny to look for Desmond at report back. Unless we're to assume that sometime in Penny's past she's been trained as a helicopter pilot/parachutist.

I loved how the theme for this episode was from the book of Genesis, and then Sawyer shows up with a Phil Collins tape. Coincidence?

Jin's ghost story was great.

Yes. The Russian Zvezda K-37 seat system was specifically developed for use in the Kaman Ka-50 Black Shark, and is also used in the Ka-52 Alligator attack helicopter. The seat is more of a tractor rocket system than a full ejection seat, but it does provide for escape from the helicopter. The system first fires explosive bolts to jettison the rotor blades then jettisons the canopies and finally tractors the crewmen out. Their parachutes automatically deploy seconds later. In the United States, some work was done on a similar concept using an AH-1 Cobra helicopter, and a crew module system was tested on an H-21. Neither was followed up on.

I think it's more like Desmond obviously believes that, but we are supposed to realize that it was going to be Portuguese chick no matter what.

so, sequence of events was the following:

1. Losties hear a helicopter
2. they hear it stuttering/failing
3. (parachuter bails out of helicopter?)
4. they see something (presum. helicopter) crash in ocean
5. they see red light in sky (are we assuming this is the parachute girl?)
6. parachuter falls to island

anybody think there was more than 1 helicopter or plane? I'm confused as to why someone would wear high altitude gear if they were going to jump from a few thousand feet in a helicopter

Obviously because the entire lost island is floating in the sky, so to get above it, they were high up in altitude.

It could be that she realized the the helicopter was out of gas (or going to crash for some other reason), parachuted out and let the chopper crash into the ocean or something like that.

I also am confused by the high altitude gear... but couldn't that have been what she needed to wear to pilot the chopper?

I think the more impressive thing is the pilot knew how to get there. I know she didn't land as planned but if there is a way to get there, then they can come with more help.

Because it's more dramatic if the chick is wearing a helmet for Desmond to take off.
