Macs are fantastic. There is <1% of the population (those who neeeed to have the newest geforce installed, have already preordered the optimus keyboard, etc) for whom owning a mac is useless. The rest of us, including MOST people in the tech/cs fields, are better served with one of Apple's offerings than anything else on the market. The home user will be fine with OS X and iLife for most of the tasks they need, while anyone who needs to run specialty programs in windows or linux can do so via parallels or bootcamp. I would agree that someone who needs to use windows exclusively would be better off with a cheaper machine, but for a huge number of people owning a Mac is the best option: you can run anything you want on an elegant, well-designed machine. Of course, the Mac Pros are super expensive, but the low-end iMac is only slightly more expensive than the comprably equipped Dell or HP Vista machine, with an equally good if not better OS. On the portable side, the low-end macbook has a sweet price point for all the features it packs in.

They are definetly not over-rated, but also definetly not under-rated: I think they deserve most of the praise they get. I have worked on tons of machines (Mac and PC, Desktop and Laptop, XP, Vista, OS X 9, 10.1-4, Ubuntu) so I feel like I have enough experience to make this assertion.
