i just did 25 lbs in 90 days, which was pretty good. i probably did the first 20 in 6-7 weeks, but hit a little plateau after that and started cheating a lot. however i'm back on track now and working out a lot, so i'll be able to hit my goal of a total of 40lbs lost by the end of february.

I'm down 25 pounds (232 to 207) since Labor Day, which was 91 day ago.
Probably 25 more to go and I'll be ripped at 182. Once I get there, I need to figure out how to maintain, because I really don't enjoy dieting/starving and working out all the time. Ugh. |

think of what you hate more: dieting or working out all the time. once you have your answer, either start eating more or working out less, and there you go! alternately you could eat a little more and start lifting pretty hard, you'll put on some weight in muscle but it'll pay off since you'll be able to eat more |

I'm down 25 from 255 to 230 since 8/11. I really could have dropped more but I went completely off the rails several times. Only 50 pounds to go though!

all,
if i'm doing cardio to take weight off, how long should i be running for? also it's better (in terms of weight loss), if i'm going to run 3 miles, to run it a little slower than as fast as possible, right? |

Hmmm, I missed this thread before (I think) and I don't know when I officially started trying to lose weight, but I've dropped from 249 at my highest (that was my wakeup call, don't be 250!) and yesterday I weighed in at 211. I actually haven't worked out much in the past month, or else I'd probably be 205.
I'm losing most of my weight by eating healthy. As said elsewhere, the biggest keys have been 1) moving 1 mile from work and eating at home instead of fast food, 2) eating less, and 3) eating healthier foods (I buy 90% of my groceries at Trader Joe's these days). My goal? I dunno. 200ish and then I'm going to start working on adding muscle. My working out has almost been entirely cardiovascular right now. On a good week, I get in at least 20 miles combined on the treadmill, elliptical, hiking, or kayaking. |

[/ QUOTE ] My treadmill routine goes like this: 2 or 3 minute intervals, depending on what I feel like Start with brisk walk intervals, all at 3.5-4.0 MPH Incline: 7.5% -> 10% -> 12.5% -> 15% -> 12.5% -> 10% -> 7.5% Then a run interval at 0% and 6.5-7.0 MPH Repeat until the machine stops (101 minutes at the 24 Hour Fitnesses around me) I like this routine because you get a lot of variation, I can do this much longer than running or jogging, and playing with the machine every 3 minutes gives me a little something to do making the time fly a little faster. That and an iPod. I'd be bored out of my mind if it weren't for my iPod. |

[/ QUOTE ] it depends on what you're looking for roughly speaking, you burn as many calories over a specified length regardless of if you run it at 10mph or 3mph - it's the length of time you run for for example if you ran 3 miles at two different speeds, after the 3 miles you will have burned about as many calories - however, obviously you will have a higher calories burned per hour at the faster speed as well, the faster you run the more muscle mass (instead of fat) you burn I believe that for optimal fat loss you should maintain ~55% of your maximum heart rate over your exercise, and for optimal cardio training you should maintain ~70-75% of your maximum heart rate |
