Anything by Richard Cheese. He's the king.

QFT.

In the same vein, anything by Me First and the Gimme Gimmes.

Little Wing by SRV
Voodoo Child by SRV

[/ QUOTE ]

Good, but not better than the originals.

[/ QUOTE ]

I've played SRV's and Hendrix's back to back before just to answer that question, and to me, SRV's is better.

But, as with all music, tastes vary.

Voodoo Child by Hendrix is better than SRV. I think Little Wing by SRV is better though.

[/ QUOTE ]

I agree with this.

I haven't read the whole thread, I assume Dynamite Hack's cover of Boys in the Hood has been mentioned.

I also like fiona apple's cover of Across the Universe more than the original.

About Blue Monday: I have a cover of it on my computer by Rammstein (!) (at least that's what the label says) that is excellent.

Which reminds me, there is a remix of Rammstein's Sonne by Clawfinger that is amazing. It's way better and extremely different than the original.

OP, is this "Blue Monday" the same as the Fats Domino song?

Also, not sure if I mentioned this, but The Sonics version of "Have Love Will Travel" is phenomenal. One of my all-time favorite songs.

Quite honestly, I'm not familiar with that version, so I don't know. If you click on the links I have in the OP, you can hear samples on Amazon.com. I'd be surprised if you haven't heard the New Order version.

As said once already, Hurt by Johnny Cash is better than the original. Even Trent Reznor thinks it's better.

Disturbed covered Land of Confusion on their latest album. It is outstanding.

The Rolling Stones' version of "You Gotta Move" off the great album Sticky Fingers. Really cool unison melody with the vocals and acoustic slide (I think it's acoustic, I don't remember). Mick's vocals shine on this. The minimal drumming fits perfectly in this song. The song is great played by anybody else, but the Stones made the perfect version.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that the composer and original performer is Mississippi Fred McDowell

Crimson and Clover by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts is also a fave of mine...but again I prefer the original by Tommy James and the Shondells.

[/ QUOTE ]

Joan Jett did an entire album of covers called "The Hit List". I thought most of it was good. Following is a list of the songs on the Album:

Dirty Deeds (ACDC)
Love Hurts (Nazareth)
Pretty Vacant (Sex Pistols)
Celluloid Heroes (Kinks)
Tush (ZZ Top)
Time Has Come Today (The Chambers Brothers)
Up From The Skies (Jimi Hendrix)
Have You Ever Seen The Rain? (Creedence Clearwater Revival)
Love Me Two Times (The Doors)
Roadrunner USA (???????)

A good CD to have if you are a JJ fan.

Dave Matthews Band's cover of Hendrix's (Dylan's) All Along The Watchtower is definitely better than the original.

[/ QUOTE ]FYP. Flame away

I don't really think it's better, but it's definitely a sick song to experience live by DMB.

[/ QUOTE ]

Obviously the Hendrix version is king, but at the one DMB concert I've been to they played this as an encore with Ben Harper on slide guitar and it was probably the best live performance of any song I've ever seen.

no one mentioned that elvis did a ton of cover songs that were at least as good as the originals. my mind is fried right now...must be bedtime. elvis's covers became elvis songs.

"That's Alright Mama" immediately comes to mind. It was written by Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup, a delta blues singer and guitarist.

It was Elvis' first single, released by Sun records. On the flipside of the record was a 'hopped up' cover of a bluegrass song written by Bill Monroe, "Blue Moon Of Kentucky".

There ya go, 1-2 punch.
