I'm still not sure why they introduced these characters in the first place. I was under the impression that they were to be used as a plot device to explain some mystery. What did this episode explain?

Boone and Shannon were kinda meaningless too, which was strange since it seemed like Shannon would be a central character(her brothers death, her hating Locke because of it, her transformation from snob to nice girl, her relationship with Sayid).
