Re: \"buffoonery by blacks whitening NFL\" article by Jason Whitlock
I mean I get that, but did like Tom Cruise say it last week or something and now everyone else has decided to overuse it whenever possible?

Re: \"buffoonery by blacks whitening NFL\" article by Jason Whitlock
I think that some people here are confusing "hip-hop culture" and the culture of lower to low middle class african-americans, socioecomically speaking. To some people, hip-hop culture might just be a more politically correct way of saying poor black people. I am not saying this is true or not, I am just saying that people's definitions might be diverging thus causing one side of the argument to not see the other's argument accurately.
Also, as en educator in a large urban school district, I disagree with JoA. Nobody is trying to "whiten" up anyone. All we are trying to do is get students to behave and learn. I don't think that constitutes as trying to make african-americans more white. |

[ QUOTE ]
The basic idea is that the dominant culture of whites values individualism and competitiveness, while the culture of most minorities (typically Blacks, Hispanics, and American Indians) focus on cooperation. [/ QUOTE ] is this what you're referring to? my dad has explained this to me on a few occasions, i'll hit him up for the research. |

Sorry, didn't see your post asking for citations/links.
Here's a good summary: Bridging identities among ethnic minority youth in schools |

I agree with this statement, though I think JoA was making he statement (obviously) in good faith. There is a sort of clash of cultures going on IMO. |

Yeah, I didn't mean it maliciously, although it sounds that way.

[ QUOTE ]
"hip-hop culture" hurts everyone who practices it in all areas of life, be it sports or anything else. by "hip-hop culture" I mean - guns, violence, drugs, and pointless displays of wealth are cool! Education and being respectful to others is selling out! Not a recipe for a happy or productive life for anyone. [/ QUOTE ] This stuff isn't unique to hip hop. What about the "rock and roll culture". |
