Here's an update for you...

I have received 40 responses from interested people. Thats great. I expect to get a few more by Monday evening. Then we'll know which topic to choose and get started. In any case, if most of those people actually pony up the cash to join in on the fun, I think we'll be fine.

There are two issues on the horizon.
1. How do we select individual niches once the topic has been set? We'll need an effective way to both come up with good targetted niches as well as limiting overlap. My preference is that no two individuals should be focused on the same specific niche. What would be a good mechanism to allow someone to select their niche and let the group know that niche is taken? Maybe I can create a quick and dirty webpage to show taken/not taken.

2. What CMS should we use? I would prefer us to all use the same one or two. Wordpress and Joomla were mentioned. I also have heard Drupal is a good choice. I have used Wordpress myself, and it is very slick with lots of plugins. It is however more suited for a blog. I haven't used any CMS before, but I imagine they are at least similar to Wordpress. I would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone with experience in this area. I would prefer an open source solution, since its free and there is usually good support. I know there is a plugin for Wordpress which makes it easy to "Digg". I think that Digg might be a useful part of our strategy, so if that is available in the other CMSs I would like to know.

Internet Relay Chat. Basically a collection of servers to form a network where users can create their own channels.

go to mirc

download/install

connect to a server on Efnet
type /server irc.efnet.org

join a channel
type /join #mmf

1a. You could start a new thread and let people post the niche they want to do but don't accept any posts earlier than say 7pm on friday.

1b. If people come up with similar niches maybe you could see if they can focus their niches even further.

2. I prefer joomla but only because i've worked with it and i know the types of components they have available. it woudl be very easy to set up forums/ecommerce/advertising management/picture galleries

from what i've seen wordpress is a lot more for blog type posting and drupal is for developers who want more flexibility when designing web apps.

i guess it all comes down to what you're gonna do with your website and it probably shouldn't be a once size fits all.

I would prefer joomla too, but it has a little bit of a learning curve to it. Things as simple as putting up a header might be tough for those with zero knowledge of html and CSS.

Maybe we could break it into sub groups? That way people have more flexibility in their design. Joomla is cool, but it's not really the best solution for certain kinds of websites.

I've also made a forum for us. If we want to use it. This is one of the things I'd like to learn about. So I hope we use it.

Yeah, I don't want to try to pigeon hole people on a particular CMS. But for the noobs in the group, we should maybe have 1 or 2 default standards.
Is there a Digg plugin for Joomla? Drupal? If you don't know what I am talking about check out johnchow.com. He has a little Digg button under each of his entries. I thought that when one of us has a decent article, then we could have everyone in the group Digg it to get the Digg ranking up higher resulting in higher traffic to the site.
