This is still incorrect. Any reputable tire shop will have an oil lubricated air compressor, followed by a coelescing filter (to remove the oil carryover and particles between 10 and 1 micron that the generic intake filter to the compressor didn't catch) and then followed by a refridgerated dryer.

This dryer removes the moisture in the air down to a 35 degree F pressure dewpoint (at least 100 psi). There is very little moisture left after that, especially because the air in your tires is only at ~30 psi, not 100 (the pressure where the 35 degree dewpoint was achieved, and BTW most shops do it at 150 psi). Any nitrogen generator that a tire shop has is just going to be passing this already dry and oilfree air through some more filters and then through a membrane that 'filters' out the oxygen. If you were to fill your tires up with the shop air, vs. the nitrogen, you will not see a noticable difference in moisture content.

If you go to a small machine that accepts quarters, all bets are off. You will be taking the humidity of the air at ~14.5 psi atmospheric, and pressurizing it to ~45 psi absolute (gauge pressure is absolute - atmospheric, so ~30 psi in this case, and that's what you read w/ a pressure guage!), effectivly raising the relative humidity. This is something that is worth avoiding, even if it takes $5.

No, it's not. In race cars water vapor is the main reason. I'm a big F1 fan and that's how I first learned about the use of nitrogen in tires. They don't have tires long enough to worry about oxygen corrosion or leakage. Although I will admit that the small difference between the nitrogen and the dry air in F1 tires may be merely academic. I don't know, but that's the official reason. Maybe a tank of N2 is easier to carry than a dryer.

With planes and trucks it's a different story as corrosion is a factor among other things.
