Well, okay, we'll go to an alternate dimension. We'll have the consensus "best team in baseball" (detroit? chicago-w?) take on the consensus all-star team here for 162 games, and we'll see who wins more.

Why do we need to go to an alternate universe? I don't see any Chisox or Tiggers on the "Consensus All-Star Team". That being said, the CWS/DET teams would both get smoked.

Stranger things have happened though; Team USA didn't even make the Semis of the WBC, and Cuba won it all...

Team USA really sucked it hard though. With Jeter, Young, and Griffey it had some horrible defensive players out there.

While true the WBC does tend to show my point. Collections of superstars (USA, Dominican) were inferior to teams (Japan, Cuba). Granted if those superstar collections had a proper spring training and a full season together things may have turned out differently. Better talent is a good thing in baseball. I just think that statistically oriented baseball fans miss a lot of the big picture that is emphasised by proper team and situational play.

I don't think you can really say the USA team was inferior to the Japanese team when they beat them, no? Using the results of such a small amount of games to determine who was better is pretty short-sighted. We're talking about, like, what? 8 games max for the teams? Some of them came against ridiculously inferior competition.

Can you give examples of "proper team and situational play?"

Meh. Look at USA Olympic Basketball in 2004, as well as the World Championships in 2002.

- You're talking about basketball
- Those teams were far from "all-star teams"
- They were badly coached anyway.

You might consider putting Vernon Wells in CF.
