Dylan isn't really a rock n rolla. There's a big enough difference between Dylan and Jimi, GnR, etc that those covers can sound fresh. I don't particularly care for the GnR cover, but Hendrix's cover is pure genius.

[ QUOTE ]
I think the trick to good covers is taking a song and completely transforming it to your style. If you're a rock band and you try to cover a good rock song, you're gonna fail. It's simply going to be too similar to the original version for anybody to think of it as the definitive version. You should be borrowing from another style of music to bring something fresh to the song. Most of the good covers I've heard were adapted to rock n roll from other styles, mainly blues and folk. [/ QUOTE ] And this is why I like good rock and roll songs that have been adapted by non-rock (or less rocking) acts. |

Here's a good mp3 blog devoted to cover versions:
http://copycommaright.blogspot.com/ Posts seem to be themed around covers of a particular artist. |

Sweet Child of Mine - Sheryl Crow [/ QUOTE ] Winner. I remember the first time I heard this, and fighting off the urge to jam my thumbs into my eyes so that my brain would stop paying attention to my ears. And then thinking "please, god, at least don't let her try to do the 'where do we go' part". And she did. |

Gloria by Shadows of Night was covered decently by Van Morrison and also by Patti Smith. [/ QUOTE ] It was written by Van Morrison and originally recorded by his group Them. [ QUOTE ] Different covers of Knockin on Heavens Door (and yes, I do like the GnR one) by various rock artists are all decent. Thinking of Bob Dylan, GnR, Warren Zevon. [/ QUOTE ] Um, Dylan wrote it for Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid, he didn't cover it. |
