That wiki link was a good read. I didn't realize how many shots and putts Watson pulled completely out of his ass in order to win that day. I do remember watching it though, and was definitely pulling for Jack to win - nothing against Tom - so the chip-in on 17 was a bit of a dagger. I remember the SI cover that week: "Jack won in '62 and '72, can he win in '82?" Damn near.
I don't feel too bad though about Tom winning per the reference of it being his only US Open victory. Another thing about that article, for some reason I had no idea at all that they played the PGA there in 1977. |
