Five minute Mario shouldn't be that hard, back when I was in college there was a whole bunch of us who spent a week trying to finish Mario on an original Nintendo, no emulation, and we could get it down to I believe somewhere around 5 and a half minutes. I wouldn't doubt that if you spent even more time on it that you could carve another 15 seconds or so off of that time, it's really much easier than it looks.

And that makes it easier to program for. That mario run through looked like forward was held almost the entire time with specifically timed jumps. It's unbelievable how lucky that mario run through was.
