Re: 2007-2008 CBB mechanical Home small faves System
[ QUOTE ]
Should home-court advantage be weighed perhaps a little less for these games? Crowd-size should be smaller and less enthusiastic than normal since most students will be hopping out of town. Obviously away-team is still traveling to an unfamiliar environment but I was under the assumption that the influence of the fans in attendance made a difference to the home-team also. I remember going to a couple of Tuesday-before-Thanksgiving games and mid-majors like Miami-Ohio and Wright St and sometimes the crowds are less than half of what they would normally be. Just something to think about anyway. [/ QUOTE ] Yeah, I think this is an interesting point. It probably holds more weight with a school like Miami because its not a big commuter school. The effect may not be as large for a school like Akron. I wish my Muskies were playing at Miami this week instead of last. |

Right. When I went to a game at Wright St which I think I remember being the Tues before Thanksgiving, the crowds was only a little smaller than it would otherwise be...because WSU is a commuter school for the most part and because they were playing Miami who brought a handful of fans of their own.
Miami is not a commuter school. I went to some Tues-before-Thanksgiving games when I was a kid as well as Dec 20 or Dec 27 type games where the crowd was easily under 2,000 because all the students were away and Oxford pretty much becomes a ghost-town. I think they've mostly concluded that they should just stop bothering to even schedule home-games during that period. But I can see where it wouldn't make as much of a difference at a commuter-school and I really don't know anything about the teams that Naj has listed for tonight. Definitely think that home-crowd and noise was helpful for Miami's big win against Xavier. |

But I still note that I really have no idea how much the crowd actually plays a role in home-court advantage.
I travelled around with Miami-Ohio's womens basketball team a lot too and they are playing for crowds of about 300 in most of the places they go. Even with such really small crowds in much larger arenas I think the home-team still had a noticeable advantage. |

just a reminder that 'hated biggest rival' games like XU-Cinci and LV-Kentucky and StJoes v Nova v Penn are exempt.

Re: 2007-2008 CBB mechanical Home small faves System
Is that because the away fans travel when they play a rival?
Also, good looking out, MicroBob. I think the fact that students go home for Thanksgiving is a big enough factor to bet significantly less on this week's games. |

Re: 2007-2008 CBB mechanical Home small faves System
my guess is it's due to rival teams being fired up and expecting a hostile crowd where normal road opponents get overwhelmed sometimes in a hostile environment during close ball games.
