Re: WOW ZOMGWTFBBQ Part II: new Paul Thomas Anderson trailer!!!
I've always thought Magnolia was brilliant. In fact I'd rate it
1. Boogie Nights 2. Magnolia 3. Sidney aka Hard Eight 4. Punch Drunk Love |

Wow. I had no idea this was what PTA was up to. Looks absolutely awesome. I can't believe nobody has mentioned the movie that to me this most looks like (from the trailer anyway): Heaven's Gate. No? Might this be the masterpice that HG so wanted to be? Jesus I hope so. Maybe HG except with Cimino's epic vision, Mallick's extraordinaty lighting/imagery and PTA'a sense of style, story and characterisation? [/ QUOTE ] Since you mentioned Malick again, I'm surprised you don't think this film looks most like Days of Heaven. The style seems much closer to that than to Heaven's Gate, which was impressive in its ambition but wasn't as poetic as this trailer is. |

Re: WOW ZOMGWTFBBQ Part II: new Paul Thomas Anderson trailer!!!
Joker, yeah "Days of Heaven" certainly came to mind - the beutiful light on DDLewis in the carriage and on the child crying are pure Malick. Also, the bit in the trailer where it tracks along beside the men running towards the burning oil pump is very reminiscent of the scenes in Day of Heaven in the cornfields. Yeah, very much so.
But what reminded me of Heaven's Gate was: > The DDL character looks reminiscent of Kris Kristofferson's character in HG > The shot inside the barn is very reminiscent of the famous dance sequence in HG > The setting looks similar: prospecting outposts (oil here, cattle in HG) around turn of century where the railroad and other approaching 20th Century "technologies" are taking the place of the old west > Evoking the brutality of the time looks similar But yeah, in visual style I'd definitely say more Malick than anyone by the looks of things. And considering how immersed PTA is in cinema, it is entirely likely that Malick and Cimino (even Leone) are his reference points. BTW, I never bought the revisionism about Heaven's Gate. It is an ambitious failure. It's also pretty dull, and not nearly as visually arresting as some say. A shame, but there it is. If you have never read "Final Cut" by Stephen(?) Bach (it's the behind the scenes story of the diasterous making of HG) I highly recommend it. |

Cop Land had Robert DeNiro and Harvey Keitel in it (and Ray Liotta helps too), but it was still mediocre and forgettable. [/ QUOTE ] Terribly disappointing movie. Sly surprisingly good in it, too. I don't think the kid director did a bad job, and I really liked the cinematography. Just an awful, awful script. Basic idea really wasn't half-bad, either. |

M Night is a much better director, when he's on his game, than he is a writer. [/ QUOTE ] Or even than he is an actor. |

PT Anderson rocks. Love that many of his movies take place in the "Valley". San Fernando Valley (of Los Angeles) to people that don't know.
Boogie Nights rocks. I can watch that from any point forward to the end at a given moment. |

PJ - I think you should stick to the more normal post title convention. The way you do it makes it more difficult to use the search function.

At the time I made this thread, nobody would know what "There Will Be Blood" meant, but "new PTA movie" is clear. Back then it didn't really matter what the title was. If I made the thread today, yes I would call it "There Will Be Blood" but perhaps with some ZOMGs and BBQs for flair. |
