Hand from weeeeeks ago (8-16 at HG)
Here is a hand from the last HE session I played.
I have a tight-solid image. I open from EP1 with AJ. Two callers along with the BB. BB is the villain in this hand. Known to be a solid poker player in general but a loose cannon, does some funny stuff. We have played together a fair amount but never really tangled in a hand until tonight. The first hand we played against each other tonight went like this... UTG limp, Villain limp, fold, I raise with QQ, two calls, so a few to the flop. J76 - check to me, I bet, he c/r one call, I three bet he calls. Turn 9 and it checks to me again and he raises again. River was something stupid and I folded after he bet with confidence. In general he has been on a rush. BACK to the actual hand now... Flop is J55 They check to me, I bet, villain calls along with player on his left who has been calling EVERYTHING so that doesn't mean much. Turn is 8 so board of J558 He donks. Is he trying to bet three-bet? Ole' donk the turn is the new c/r?? Trying to make me fold because he thinks I am FOS/weak/whatever? What is going on here? Do I raise for value? Call down? Raise the river? Soooo many options!!!!!! |

I'm confused, which means my default play is to call down. I don't want to get three bet.

Since you have a read the hand is a tad easier to play. Do you think the villain is capable of 3 betting with a worse jack or 8 or straight draw? If not, then raising here, folding to a 3 bet, and bet/folding the river may work. If you arent sure or dont want to open yourself up to a 3 bet just call down, you make money if he is pushing a weaker hand obviously and will never be bluffed out.
Sometimes this a 5 if the villain thinks you will check behind in fear of a c/r (though if he thinks this he should have played the flop fast), sometimes this is just a pair or top two, sometimes its air. |
