Because just by opting how, he cost the Yankees around $21m dollars in subsidies. Even if they signed ARod to a deal that doesn't raise his salary for '08-'10 above what it was under the old contract, that alone adds $21m to what the Yankees have to pay out of their funds.

Of course he wanted the Yankees to be bidders -- he and Boras (or at least Boras) simply thought the Yankees were bluffing. He hubris was such that he thought the Yankees wouldn't sweat the $21m subsidy at all. I don't care how much money you have, $21m is a lot of it, and the Yankees seem to feel the same way.

The main, if not only, reason the Yankees won't bid on Arod is because they made such a big deal of drawing the line in the sand over not doing so if he opted out.

It is very hard to back away from such unequivocal statements.

For them to back away from that, I think that Arod himself would have to do a huge public mea culpa, or perhaps even fire Boras.
