I think almost every great album is like this. These are the ones that stand out for me:

Catherine Wheel, Adam & Eve
Neutral Milk Hotel, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
My Bloody Valentine, Loveless
Built to Spill, Perfect From Now On

But the biggest example for me was Kid A by Radiohead. I HATED the album when I first listened to it. So much that I didn't listen to it for almost a year. Then I saw a bunch of "best of the year" lists that listed Kid A. So I listened to it again. Still hated it.

So it went on and on like that for another year. Every couple of months, I would listen to it. I'd hate it and promise not listen to it again. But there was something about it that made me keep going to it every few months. I finally realized why I kept coming to it even though I "hated" it--because there were 5 awesome songs on it and 5 crappy songs. So I finally decided that those 5 songs were the best songs Radiohead ever made, even though the rest of the album sucked.

By the time Hail to the Thief came out, I realized it wasn't just 5 awesome songs, it was more like 8 or 9. (I still hate Treefingers to this day).

Hated Amnesiac for a long time also, though I took to Hail to the Thief relatively quickly.

Definitely 10,000 Days. I was pretty suspect of the album even after the first few listens. Now I have a hard time deciding which of Aenima, Lateralus, and 10,000 Days is my fav. Tool album.

In 1996 or so when Aenima came out, I bought it. I was young, and entering my 'hard music' phase, and all I had heard of hte album was "Stinkfist" (titled "Track 1" by MTV) and I was blown away and bought the album.

Was NOT what I was expecting, I thought that it would be a lot more metal, and I shelved it.

Then I listened to it occasionally casually, while I was playing video games or something, and I realized one day that I absolutely loved it. Still my favorite album of all time.

I became aware of Tool about the time I stopped having time to listen to album after album and had to start getting serious about life (yes, I'm old, don't ask). The first time I heard one of their songs, I just stopped and said "That's [censored]' awesome!" I need to hear more of that." Any recommendations on what to start on if I ever get around to it? Also, what is it about 10,000 Days that's hard to warm up to?

I usually like a few of the songs off of these albums at first. I loved "Idioteque," "Holland, 1945," "Heavy Metal Drummer," whatever. So I would keep coming back to these albums for thos songs.

I've always found anecdotally that the more times you have to listen to an album to really start liking it, the more lasting power it has and the more powerful it becomes.

I'll have to add Incubus - SCIENCE to this list.

It's really funny, seriously--I didn't want to get involved in this thread, but then decided to ONLY in order to enter my votes for 10,000 days and Kid A. I climb in, only to find that I am obviously not alone.

What a strange phenomenon. When they came out, I was looking at each of these CD's the way Larry David does when he thinks someone is lying to him.

Now, they're two of my very closest friends.
