I actually think there is a better chance of inducing ftop error postflop by calling here preflop but I still prefer 3betting because donkament players are all terrible at lhe I'm sure so the hand will be easier to play and we are much more likely to play the pot HU, and we just plain have the best hand too often.

I agree that the call was likely due to the fact that it was a tournament. Obviously the optimal play is to raise, but calling isn't terrible and is a lower variance play.

I actually think calling is a higher variance play. To all who say this is because its a tournament, could you elaborate?

I honestly didn't stand that part very much either.

I'm guessing it's because we don't want to put a large portion of our chips in OOP as a 3:2 or something where we have the potential to get outplayed. In which case I'd think folding would be best.

It seems like by calling we have to make the best hand and now we're often against 2 villains, where as 3 betting we force CO to make a hand and it's heads up.

This thread has potential though.

Can't speak to a tournament, but in a cash game I'd surely rather play head-up than 3-way in front of two others with A-Jo.

The thing about tournaments........

And again...I am not current on tournaments as I have played fewer than 6 over the past three years and none this year. But I used to play in a lot(250+) and even the micro buy in ones at the time had big name players and I have played with Kathy Liebert, Allen Cunningham, Toto Leonidas, and other top names in tournaments under $150 buy in.

Anywho, when I was playing, there are a number of extremely tight players who will only have a pf open range of 10's and better and AQ and better. So even given an average chip stack with low blinds, there are a number of players where AJ get shipped to the muck. And its not even a difficult decision.

In fact, there are tournament books out there that recommend mucking AQ in ep. Not that this is good advice, but people do read these things and follow their advice.

And another thing is that you do not have to three bet in a tournament often times to get the BB out. Again depends on how tight the BB is.

I think folding is better than calling, and raising is better than folding.

[/ QUOTE ]

I'm a little confused by this. I would agree that either 3-betting is the best play or folding is the best play, assuming that there's no strange late tournament issues at hand. But if 3-betting is best, then coldcalling must be second best. If you have a large enough edge over PFR's range to make 3-betting to isolate OOP correct, it seems very hard to find a way to make coldcalling and letting BB come along with very weak hands for cheap to be so much worse that you're better off just folding. You're ahead of PFR most of the time and you're very very likely going to be ahead of BB, so you stand to be ahead most of the time. How can this be a spot to fold?

I think the most important argument for raising is driving out the player behind us
