How do Americans view Europeans?

Beef with Europeans: They love to hate on Americans for only speaking English, and love to brag about speaking three or more languages.

But then you speak with one of these Hungarians (for example) and his English is so broken and remedial that you wonder what their standard is for "speaking" other languages.

I took German in HS, but I wouldn't dream of claiming to speak German.
