Four Tet is amazing to listen to while playing poker. Very good, mellow electronic music. A bunch of songs featur acoustic guitar samples and Four Tet has even been referred to as "folktronic."
Slowcore music from bands like Low or Bedhead is +EV too. |

Didn't realize that this thread was still going. It's remarkable how much overlap there is in the forum's music taste.
Some other random recent picks/discoveries/pretentious namedrops: Arcade Fire Fischerspooner (worth forgiving them the electroclash posturing) Os Mutantes Vitalic Susumu Yokata Tortoise (okay, this isn't a new discovery) Bloc Party Lali Puna |

Re: +EV Music
Rory,
I know exactly what you mean. Separately, I think there's probably some benefit to listening to music that isn't overly dependant on lyrics, since I think the brain gets more distracted by language than it does by arrangements of sound. |

Re: +EV Music
The other thing you could try is buying a couple of those CDs that are supposed to enhance concentration. They are unlikely to work but who cares? Even if they have a placebo effect on you that is fine. I used one of those sleep ones once and it worked like a charm-- I don't believe in any of that crap either, I think it was all totally in my mind, but it worked anyway. The placebo effect is a real effect when it comes to perceptual stuff after all.
You might be able to train yourself to concentrate. If you develop good habits. Like do something like turn off the TV and all distractions, burn a specific kind of incense and put on one of those concentration CDs and only play when you are really going to focus and not do something else. Then you will train your mind to not go all over the place when you are playing, because your mind will correlate the smell/music with concentrating, and will be more likely to calm down a bit while you are playing. I think that is the idea behind all that stuff in meditation halls and what have you. If you have a little ritual before you play, you can quiet down your mind a little bit and make it easier to concentrate and focus. Maybe it would be better, even, to have music you only listen to while playing. And then only play if you are not going to do anything else, so you really train your mind to focus only on what you are doing. Be super proactive about it. I dunno maybe I'm getting extreme. It would be cool to see how far you could go to try to tame your mind though. |
