Re: US faces US$100 billion fine for web gambling ban
[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] The problem with that is: The US wants/needs the WTO to control other members, like China. If it just completely ignores the WTO in this case, it will basically kill the WTO and any future sanctions will hold no water. [/ QUOTE ] For sure. The US may find a way to wriggle out of this, but they will definitely not just ignore it. It's a lot more serious than that. [/ QUOTE ] Yeah where the rubber hits the road is when the CEO of Disney calls up John Kyl and says "[censored] your moral crusade, I need IP protection for my DVDs." Generally speaking, once something becomes an issue for Big Business, business wins and the fundie are ignored. See, e.g. immigration. |

[ QUOTE ]
it doesnt matter what the WTO decides to do or how big the fine is because the US govt doesnt care and just wont pay it and theyll keep doing w/e they want. [/ QUOTE ] For someone who makes a living off of Online gaming you would think they would be a little more educated on the subject. The WTO can impose sanctions on the US and allow countries effected like Antigua to legally violate the US intellectual Properties and sell "legal" software, movies, music etc without any backlash from the US. |

Re: US faces US$100 billion fine for web gambling ban
This is big news, and a whole lot different than Antigua alone pushing it via the WTO.
The fact is, I'm a bit surprised nothing happened earlier (maybe it did at less public diplomatic channels). Britain was especially hurt. The Economist wrote a leader describing the ban as protectionist last year, and the British tabloid press was more venomous, openly asking "these are supposed to be our allies?" after the ban erased hundreds of millions of pounds value from publically traded companies. |

The only problem here is that its cheaper for US to "bring democracy" to Antigua than to pay the fine.

Thats a great reason for nobody to ever vote for a dumb ass republican again. [/ QUOTE ] LOL. The obvious reply is to write that this must have been written by a Democrat but I have too many Democrat friends. To lump this abortion in with their political party would be downright cruel. |

[/ QUOTE ] Like China is going to listen to the WTO anyway...LOL at stupid people. The santions the WTO imposes now hold no water. If we pay the fine then it still holds no water and china will do as it likes. |
