Would anyone like to take this bet up w/ me? I am thinking a smallish friendly bet to motivate me to work out more that I will be willing to escrow. Maybe like 501-515 is a push though? I have to think about it though, i don't know if i have the kind of discipline this is gonna take.

Whats the fastest you've ever ran a mile? I think this is key. Some people are just naturally better at it and while they may be out of shape now, they could do it quite easily if they trained. Others, like me, just aren't runners. We ran for basketball in college during the preseason. This was right after the summer as we came back for school, and I was always in my absolute best shape right at the end of our preseason workouts...and the best I ever ran was like 5:50....I'm just not a long distance runner. |

I hadn't run regularly in almost 4 years. I was a smoker on and during most of that time and have recently quit. About a month and a half ago I started running again. I run 2 or more miles at a time almost every day, but I can do those in 12 min is all I know because of the treadmill I started on. I have never run a timed single mile.
When I was in my peak shape, which was nearly 6 years ago, I could run two miles with full pads and a helmet on in under 12 minutes. For most of the season, I was probably capable of running two miles w/o pads on around 11:15, occasionally being faster, and being way slower in the beginning of the season. I would guess I could run a 5:45 mile right now, and that I could run a 515 at some point within a 7 month period. I honestly don't know how hard it will be to cut 45 seconds, but swingdoc made it sound like it would be really hard. |

Sounds like you're not too far removed from some pretty good running times. But shaving 45 seconds (which is 13% of a 5:45 mile, which you think you can do) isn't going to be that simple. Maybe train at altitude and run at sea level (hopefully without heat & humidity that you wouldn't be used to in CO) for the bet. |

Only the OP on this thread can only run a mile in 7:45. Cutting 2:45 in 7 months must be nearly impossible. It's very likely he would never be able to run a 5 minute mile. |

[/ QUOTE ] I could probably cut 1:30 off my mile in <2 months from the starting time. I could probably cut >10 minutes off my 5k in 6 months. A lot depends on how terrible shape you're in to start with. Start sedentary and never be disappointed with your progress evar. |

Op fwiw I think your like should be 5:45 to 6:00.
I think I could run a 6:30'er right now. I havent ran a timed mile in like 3 years though. |

I think you'd need about 100:1 to make this a good bet OP. I'm currently in 6 minute shape and I'd be reluctant to take this bet without odds. If you do this somehow then you probably have the genetics of a professional runner.

one minute more is pretty fast.
I cant say how blow would affect running. When I did it i would be paranoid about my heart exploding. |
