Re: help me pick a place, ill go (and trip report it)
[ QUOTE ]
i think it'd really cool to get a place on Cape Cod (MA) this time of year, because tourists are all gone, but its still been in the 70s and 80s and you could probably sit on the beach alone and just read and write and chill. In addition, you could rent a house instead of a hotel room, then just go food shopping, so you wouldn't even have to deal with going out to every meal alone. [/ QUOTE ] Totally second this idea. I have a vacation home there and even though its a lot of fun in the summer with all of the people and excitement, I enjoy going even more in the fall. The beaches are spectacular and some of the seasonal restaurants/hangouts are still open (they open in early june and close in september or october). Taking a walk on the beach alone at night is one of my favoritie activities. If you decide to look into this further PM me or post in this thread and I can give you some detailed recs. Another vacation I thought of was Napa Valley, CA. Totally awesome scenery, tons of bed and breakfast type places, and close enough to SF that you could do a day trip or two in there. There are also a bunch of national parks/moutain ranges within driving distance. -evan |

Yellowstone National Park.
Fly into Bozeman, Montana. That place is unlike anything you've ever seen, I guarantee it. |

[ QUOTE ] you probably want an escape from poker, but isn't the aruba tournament next week or something? maybe just go there, don't play the tourney and just chill out with friends. [/ QUOTE ] yeti, i respect you, but jesus this sounds like an awful idea [/ QUOTE ] haha yeah, well it's something i'd personally hate to do but i know how you poker guys like to hang out together! krantz - there was a great thread here about walking the appalachian trail. maybe you could hike a small part of it in maine/new hampshire, check that thread for more details. |

If price is no concern, rent a 50-60ft. Catamaran in the Caribbean or Keys with a 2-3 person crew. Sail around the islands and just chill.

Jay,
The finger lake area is pretty close, and really beautiful/peaceful. Pack a backpack and you won't regret. |

in reference to all the Boulder suggestions, I would actually go to Estes Park instead: http://www.estes-park.com/ gorgeous time of year for it. [/ QUOTE ] I can't speak for all of Estes Park, but when I lived in Colorado I did drive the Trail Ridge road and it was a pretty cool experience. |

Re: help me pick a place, ill go (and trip report it)
My first instinct was Maine as well...although I'm surprised by how many others echo my opinion. Bar Harbor would be a great place to just relax, drive around, check out the foliage, eat some great shore food, and be around great people. Maine gets my vote and then some (and if you're courageous at all, just about every small town on the shore has a million things to do).

Maine is a great idea, I'll also suggest Martha's Vineyard. This time of year it'll be very quiet there and on the Cape in general, renting a cottage for the week will be a total breeze. Just drive to Falmouth and take the ferry over in your car.
