Mike Huckabee, rape, and politics
Since he's running for President, I thought more people should know about Mike Huckabee letting a convicted rapist go free because of who his victim was related to (and the consequences): Arkansas Times article
Cliff's Notes: Distant cousin of Bill Clinton's gets raped. Rapist Wayne Dumond is convicted and sent to prison. Wingnuts raise hell because a Clinton was involved, so there must be a conspiracy somewhere. Huckabee leans on the parole board (appointed by him) to cut Dumond loose, and they do. Dumond murders a woman 2 years later. |

Re: Mike Huckabee, rape, and politics
I don't think Huckabee is going to win the Republican nomination now.

Re: Mike Huckabee, rape, and politics
Huckabee looks really bad in those whole episode. I would like to hear him questioned on this affair. He certainly was persistent to get a rapist freed.
If I was to make a crude political point relating to politicians in Arkansas and rapists going unpunished, I would...but I won't say it. |

Re: Mike Huckabee, rape, and politics
The whole incident would be awful even if Dumond had not gone on to commit murder. Can you imagine a teenage girl being told "They let the man who raped you go free because they don't like your cousin"?
That he did later kill someone just takes it to a new level. |

He may be a nutjob, but I'm not sure that's a disqualification.
He's the only Southerner in the race, and has a solid shot at both the Christian Right and gun lobby votes. I wouldn't laugh the guy off just yet. |

Light treatment because the victim was related to Clinton? Asinine |

Re: Mike Huckabee, rape, and politics
Take out the Clinton stuff and it never would have happened.
Huckabee didn't just decide to champion some random rapist. I think it's more of a dealbreaker if it had not been Clinton-related (at least in a Republican primary). You'll find a large number of Republicans who still consider Bill Clinton the source of all evil. |

[/ QUOTE ] It depends on the real circumstances. There arent enough facts in that article to determine how damning it is. Whitewater should have been the end of Shrillary, but she survived that. (Not that I think Huckabee had a chance without this.) Reps are a two horse race at this point, Giuliani and Thompson. |
