[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] Most of the posters here are too young to remember the fact that 30 years ago, there was a scientific consensus that a new ice age was coming (caused by humans shockingly enough), and we were all going to die. [/ QUOTE ] This is total rubbish. There was some speculation about it and considerable media coverage. However it was never anything remotely close to a scientific consensus, it was a small minority position. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_cooling [ [/ QUOTE ] In the 60's the coming ice age was taught as fact in our science classes, along with "duck and cover" as a way to survive Russia's imminent nuclear strike. It is not the debate of global warming , but the lack of consensus on the issue that arouses my spidey senses. The bonus carbon tax credit/transfer payment initiatives should have anyone over 45 on alert. |

When was the earth covered in ice? [/ QUOTE ] Before we got here. It melted before we got here, too. |

The earth was not covered in ice. The ice sheets had expanded due to colder temperatures, but they did not cover the earth. On the east coast of the US it reached New York City, which wasn't called New York City at the time.

[ QUOTE ]
lol, the environment is better than it was 20 years ago. i live in the bay area and havent seen smog in the distance for over 2 decades. there hasnt even been one heat wave this summer.......very mild. [/ QUOTE ] This is seriously stupid. Firstly, sample size. Second, average global temperate rises are not the same thing as specific temperature rises in one place. Third, smog is not what causes global warming. |

Obviously not since mankind was around though, and way before dinosaurs. |

I had remembered this from school because we went on field trips to see where the glacial movement had left marks on rocks. If I remember correctly you can see it in Central Park ( NY ). But I checked my facts before I originally posted.

Sciolist is correct, at one point the earth was effectively covered in ice. Reid, you are thinking of the last ice age. This was considerably longer ago than that, hundreds of millions of years rather than hundreds of thousands.
