Re: ADMIN: Lurker. Suicide Threat
in evaluating a suicide threat, what they teach you is that a person is at higher risk if they have a detailed plan, if that plan is highly lethal, and if they readily have the means to achieve it. lurker is 2/3 in this regard from what i can tell. history of depression, mental illness etc is also of course taken into account.
with this in mind OPs threat is pretty credible. i don't know what the protocol is in canada, but in most parts of the US the procedure would be to call 911 and have a hospital send a mobile crisis unit, which will evaluate the person and possibly bring them into care. the only appropriate intervention for us going forward is to refer this person to professionals in his area, or ensure that his family will do same. mat, it sounds like you have given this issue some thought in the past and were able to relate to this young man, which is helpful, but ultimately none of us is in a position to treat his depression, and it would be irresponsible to try. |

Re: ADMIN: Lurker. Suicide Threat
the crisis line won't call him directly. all i have for him is a cell number. based on this, they think that me keeping connected with him is the best short term plan

Re: ADMIN: Lurker. Suicide Threat
After talking with Mat, and 1-800-SUICIDE, I called the Ottawa police giving them his cell phone number and name. I just got a PM that another poster did the same.
Lurker had said he wouldn't do anything tonight and he'd call his therapist in the morning, but if this were my kid, I'd want someone knocking on my door in the middle of the night. His family deserves the chance to intervene. |

Re: ADMIN: Lurker. Suicide Threat
Good point, I doubt his parent could get all that upset about the police waking them up to tell them what their son is doing. Hopefully he gets through it.

Mat and entertainme,
Thanks for doing a really superior job with this while the rest of us were asleep in our beds. This is some pretty [censored] up [censored], and the two of you handled it terrificly. c |

Re: ADMIN: Lurker. Suicide Threat
gj guys. Cant believe one of those threads was actually real. If you actually look at his few posts leading up to that last one you could have sensed something was wrong and that the guy was depressed.

Re: ADMIN: Lurker. Suicide Threat
entertainme gets the big kudos. she started this thread. she made the right decision calling the cops.
he's going to be fine. as far I'm concerned suicidal thoughts as you reach adulthood are a sign of intelligence. i'm particularly warmed to to see how the problem children of bbv gave of themselves. i don't think i should tell them that, though. |
