Re: Baseball: Can an infielder be positioned behind the catcher on an
My team did this when I was 15 in the state tournament. I was behind the catcher to protect us if our pitcher threw a WP while doing an IBB. Nothing was called on us, but it should have been ruled a balk.

no [/ QUOTE ] So what's the rule? The fielding team has to have 8 players in fair teritory? For a while I had wondered if a team could play without a catcher when there was no one on base. Then I learned about the catchers box. |

[/ QUOTE ] All fielders other than the C must be behind the mound [/ QUOTE ] Uh...not true at all... 1b/3b creep in wayyyy past the mound when pitchers are bunting. There's a catchers' box behind the plate that the catcher has to stay inside until the pitch is released. I'd guess the rule has to do with something like 'one player in catcher's box and no one else behind plate' or something along those lines. |

Re: Baseball: Can an infielder be positioned behind the catcher on an
rule 4.03:
4.03 When the ball is put in play at the start of, or during a game, all fielders other than the catcher shall be on fair territory. (a) The catcher shall station himself directly back of the plate. He may leave his position at any time to catch a pitch or make a play except that when the batter is being given an intentional base on balls, the catcher must stand with both feet within the lines of the catcher’s box until the ball leaves the pitcher’s hand. PENALTY: Balk. (b) The pitcher, while in the act of delivering the ball to the batter, shall take his legal position; (c) Except the pitcher and the catcher, any fielder may station himself anywhere in fair territory; (d) Except the batter, or a runner attempting to score, no offensive player shall cross the catcher’s lines when the ball is in play. |
